LA MAESTRA, THE ELISABETH WALDO STORY BY TED FAYE, GOLD CREEK FILMS
This is the story of one of Los Angeles's pioneers. Her name is Elisabeth Waldo. She was born in Yakima, Washington in 1918 and was discovered for her musical talents by Yasha Heifetz. She worked with Bing Crosby, Yma Sumac and other great artists. She became enthralled with the music of ancient peoples from South America and at the suggestion of famed artist Diego Rivera she went out into the marketplace to meet the people and listen to the sounds of the instruments. She and her family still reside in the San Fernando Valley where her husband became the first president of the Northridge Chamber of Commerce and gave that town its name. Carl Dentzel was also the president of the SouthWest Museum and his contributions to western history are notable. The Elilsabeth Waldo story is one of a remarkable life that literally goes from the train tracks to the great performance halls of America. From the humblest of beginnings to meetings with Eleanor Roosevelt and playing in an orchestra led by Leopold Stokovsky the life of Elisabeth Waldo is a life well-lived.

At the time Goldfield was the epicenter of the last great gold rush in America. The boxers were fighting in what was billed the "Fight of the Century". The first black boxing champ in America (Gans) would defend his title in an epic 42 round bout that would make h...

20 MULE TEAM FAME!

How did "20 Mule Team Borax" come to be a household name for more than a century? The company, of course, used long line teams of mules to haul borax from Death Valley. But in their day they were simply called "big teams" or "long line teams" because there was nothing special about 20 mule teams. There were 16, 18, 20, 22, 24 and longer teams of mules all over the west. But using Death Valley a...

From 1883-1888 the borax mine in Death Valley was 165 miles from the nearest railroad in Mojave, California. The Southern Pacific had finally come close enough to the most remote desert in the country so that hauling borax became affordable. It was still a 10 day trip both ways and the method of hauling borax through the desert was with giant wagons, 20 mules and 2 men. This is the story of how...

Death Valley was so remote that the mineral borax had to be hauled out by 20 Mule Team. The transportation method wasn't unique or unusual. It had been used around the west since the 1870s. And now in 1884 20 Mule Teams would be used to haul borax from Death Valley to the railroad at Mojave 165 miles away. Mules were preferred for desert hauling as they are pound for pound stronger than horses,...

In 1881 borax was being mined all over the Nevada desert from Columbus Marsh to Teels Marsh to Rhodes Marsh to Fish Lake Valley. All of these places were dry lake beds where the borax was scooped off of the valley floor by Chinese laborers. Word came down from those borax fields that there was likely more places in other desert marshes. When prospector Harry Spiller met Aaron and Rosie Winters ...

These fighting men were a breed of there own kind A case of in the time became the order of the man and woman and everyone And that was the syn of the times Including depression and anxiety and other worldly pains These boxing men were literally hard as nails to the skin and some were big hearted souls Like my great great uncle Owen who beat batterling nelson sending him down in there 11 round 5/6 times and no neutral corner So he sailed three times to the United States from uk and Ireland and fought the best of the best from coast to coast And won the world title in san Francisco in the first decade of the 19 hundreds And his name aswell As my othere great uncle Michael chappie Moran who beat Tomas spider Kelly in new jersey in the last decade of the last decade of the 18 hundreds Both in the boxing hall of fame Aswell as nelson and ganns and so many more So it was a very different time and took no charlatans So to everyman who graced the ring I have respect for aswell as everyman who managed to dodge every or most street fights I also hold he the highest regards The ego is a must need But must be tamed or it will tame you more than most people couldn't even understand 🍀🥊🥊☘️🙏

I owned an adobe house in Apple Valley CA that was built in 1954. The original owner was able to acquire many huge-rustic beams and hardware from the railroad that were repurposed to support the roof and porch overhang around the perimeter of the building. The original developer of Apple Valley, Newt Bass, somehow got the timbers and used many for the construction of the Apple Valley Inn that was later bought by Roy Rogers. I assume the timbers at my house were left over from the Inn construction as the owner worked for Newt Bass.

Death Valley is like the Dead Sea. It used to alive before the USA was colonized. Don't believe the whites version of history. Death Valley used to be a giant lake before the whites had conquered the West Coast. That was back when Tulare Lake was full from North to South California and back when the San Andreas fault line did not exist yet. White Lies.

The photos of the town were great, They ought to be used in some widely disseminated documentary of this but much longer in focusing on the fight. . Gans had support among the miners from the first because he was recognized for a long established dominance in the division.Boxing was actually more widely followed then. I don;t know that Nelson was the betting favorite but if he were the odds wouldn't be wide or even uniformly similar at that time. Nelson had the particularly boorish race-bait style of hyping the gate that just might've contrasted with Gans necessarily nonplussed demeanor to effectively be off-putting to some of the miners that approached wagering objectively for the profit's sake. There was a welcoming group of miners for Gans of a couple dozen and '\ll have to assume Nelson had the same. There also might've been a dislike of Tex Richards factor as the owner of everything including Nelson's corner which he had advantaged considerably in handicapping Gans in the contract. Hell Gans had to have cojones just to beat up all the many white guys he had in the heyday of lynchings.. Once he had cleaned the lightweight division of Black fighters in winning the the "Colored" championship He pretty much had to clean it of white fighters to win the world Championship. in 1902 and in defending it. I'll just say the dispute over it made for gate hype but wasn't valid. Gans owned it until 1908. These guys would've had to be fighting in a delirium after 25 rounds in the hot Nevada Sun, I think it set Gans up for the TB along with the three weigh ins that he alone were subjected to. Some say he had it before this. Either way this was not healthy exercise, .

These teams & wagons were used to haul Borax. The stuff you buy in the grocery store. The box says TWENTY MULE TEAM BORAX. Well it's not a lie. It really did take twenty mules to that borax wagon. Borax is very heavy. I've s laundry going for those of you that live in areas that have hard water. When you do your laundry& add your laundry soap, add 1/3 cup of Borax to your washing. It's a natural water softener & your clothes will come out a lot cleaner. I live in an area with hard water & my Mom (God give her rest) told me to do this when I had terrible getting my clothes clean. My clothes used to look a little grey instead of clean. Since I started using Borax my clothes lost that grey color.
